NOÖ [14] contributor Anne Boyer on why she writes (via mobilereviews):

Anne Boyer responds:

I write because there are important things to be said: things which have never been said before, things which have been said before but need repeating, things which have been said before but need some small correction, and very old lies which I can’t stand as truth.

I write because the golden-easy-unearned-people won’t shut up, they go on and on, with perfect confidence, who believe they deserve the world as is, and fuck them.

I do not believe that any of this requires us to be very special.  I think it only requires us to be the most ordinary woman possible.  I think it requires us to already be brave in the way of the ordinary woman which is brave in the way of the dead.  In this, we can be casual and sometimes funny.  Walt Whitman said it is okay to let the fields in.

Do you remember all the ways they want to kill us?

I write because we are armies.

I write because who doesn’t have a lighter in her pocket?

I write because I wake up, like everyone else, in innocence and vision.

I write because this is a matter of fact.

I write because I am waiting for the poem written in the morning that will bring the end of this world by night.
